WorldCom and Sprint suspend their merger application

On June 29, 2000, Worldcom asked the WUTC to suspend indefinitely its application for approval to merge with Sprint. Legal briefs on the merger had been due on July 5. This action came after the European Commission decided on June 28 to prohibit the merger and the U.S. Department of Justice filed suit in federal court to block the merger.

The WUTC telecommunications staff had recommended against the proposed merger. See press release and copy of staff testimony.

These companies are the No. 2 and No. 3 providers of long-distance telephone service nationally and within Washington state. In addition, Sprint is the incumbent local exchange company for about 80,000 customers in Washington state. The WUTC is reviewing the merger and its potential effect on consumers in Washington state.
