UTC Commissioner Oshie to Chair National Energy Committee

May 13, 2008

OLYMPIA – Commissioner Patrick Oshie, of the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC), has been appointed chair of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners’ (NARUC’s) Committee on Energy Resources and the Environment, NARUC President Marcia Smith announced today.

Oshie, currently serving as Vice Chair of the committee, replaces Commissioner Phyllis Reha of Minnesota, whose three-year term expired.

The Energy Resources and the Environment (ERE) Committee serves as a venue for state regulators to address environmental issues surrounding energy services, including carbon reduction, energy efficiency, environmental protection, and renewable and distributed resources.

“I really appreciate the opportunity to serve as chair of the ERE committee. I look forward to working with the members and staff of ERE to address the challenges we face in ensuring our energy future while advancing environmentally sound policies,” Oshie said.

UTC Chairman Mark Sidran praised the appointment. “I am pleased that NARUC has appointed my colleague to this important position. Pat has a deep commitment to addressing the environmental impacts of energy services, and has a firm grasp of the issues state regulators face in a carbon-constrained world. He’s a great choice.”

Gov. Gary Locke appointed Oshie to the UTC in 2001 for a six-year term. Gov. Chris Gregoire appointed him to a second term in 2007.

Prior to joining the UTC, Oshie was a partner in a Yakima law firm, specializing in federal Indian and environmental law. He is a member of the National Council on Electricity Policy, the Electric Power Research Institute’s (EPRI) Advisory Council, and the Gas Technology Institute’s Public Interest Advisory Committee.

“Commissioner Oshie is stepping up and volunteering to serve NARUC, its members, and the country’s ratepayers at a critical time,” said Smith. “This Committee will be front and center as our country considers new environmental and energy policies, and I know Commissioner Oshie is up to the task.
