Annual Statistics of Electric Companies,1998-2007
INTRODUCTION
Privately owned electric utilities in Washington State file annual reports with the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (Commission). As part of its regulatory activities, the Commission reviews these reports and from them compiles and derives relevant financial and operating statistics. This annual publication is prepared to meet the need for a central source from which information relating to any investor-owned electric utility in the state may be obtained without having to resort to securing data from original reports each time the necessity arises. This report presents the annual statistics of Washington's three Class "A" electric utilities for the years 1998 through 2007. As of this year, the graphs cover the 20-year period 1988-2007, while the tables present only the past ten years. The prior ten years source information for the graphs may be found in previous editions of the Annual Statistics.
ELECTRIC UTILITIES OPERATING IN WASHINGTON
The three Class "A" electric utilities that operate in Washington State are: PacifiCorp (dba Pacific Power & Light Company), Puget Sound Energy, and Avista Corporation (dba Avista Utilities). Table A on the next page shows the total company revenues for each of the electric utiltities and their respective intrastate revenues. Only Puget Sound Energy (PSE) generates its electric revenue entirely within Washington State, Pacific Power & Light Company (PPL) operates primarily outside the state and Avista Utilities (AU) primarily in Washington.
Until June 9, 1999, Avista Corporation was known as The Washington Water Power Company.
In February of 1997, the Commission authorized the merger of Washington Energy Company and Washington Natural Gas Company with and into Puget Sound Energy, which previously was know as Puget Sound Power & Light Company.
PacifiCorp does business in Washington under the name Pacific Power & Light Company. PacifiCorp is owned by MidAmerica Energy Holdings Company which is a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway.

MAJOR INFORMATION BLOCKS - ANNUAL REPORTS TO COMMISSION
The annual reports submitted by the electric companies contain a large number of schedules, which are grouped in this report into relevant information blocks as follows:
Block 1: Balance Sheet--Assets and Liabilities
Block 2: Net Income and Retained Earnings
Block 3: Operating Revenue and Expenses
Block 4: Source and Disposition of Energy
Block 5: Sales, Revenue and Customers
Block 6: Plant and Electric Division Statistics
Annual data for Blocks 1 and 2 are provided for total company only, whereas data for Blocks 3, 4, 5 and 6 are provided bothy by total company and Washington State operations.
FORMAT AND CONTENT OF ANNUAL ELECTRIC STATISTICS REPORT
Time series financial and operational data is presented in tablular form in this report both in aggregate and individually for each of the three electric utilities. Three tables summarize selected data from statewide operations. Four blocks represent combined statistics of the three electric companies' Washington operations. And ten blocks each (six "Company Totals" and four "State Operations Only Totals") are included for Puget Sound Energy and Avista Utilties. Since Puget Sound Energy operates only within the state, the "Company Total" and "State Operations Only Total" are identical.
Each block is labeled for ease of use and comparison as follows:
1. Letters - the letters are an acronym for the source of information: PPL - Pacific Power & Light; PSE - Puget Sound Energy; AU - Avista Utilities; All - Aggregate data for the three companies.
2. One digit - the number is based on the information blocks above.
3. "ST" - An "ST" indicates the block reflects Washington State operations only. If the label ends with a digit, the table contains total company information.
For example, PPL.2 contains net income and retained earnings (Block 2) data for Pacific Power & Light and the figures reflect total company operations. However, PPL.5ST contains sales, revenue and customer information (Block 5) for Pacific Power in Washington only. If comparative analyses of multiple companies are needed, simply find tables of like number, e.g., PPL.1, PSE.1, and AU.1 for comparison of total assets and liabilities.
CAUTIONARY NOTE
As in any attempt to develop continuous and comparable time series data, one of the perennial difficulties encountered is the assurance of comparability of various data elements. Though comparability is assured at broad group levels, the individual data elements that are added due to changes in accounting systems pose a continuous problem for comparison over time. Considerable efforts are undertaken to accommodate these changes and revisions and improvements are incorporated as and when they become appropriate.
One change implemented in this report is to show generation capacity in the categories, fossil fuel (including coal and natural gas), hydraulic, and other non-fossil generation. Non-fossil generation includes bio-fuels, wind, and geo-thermal.
