Moving

The UTC regulates household goods moving companies who provide service to residential customers between points within the state of Washington. For information about rules that apply to moves from Washington to another state, visit the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Moving Your Household Goods


      Consumer Guide to Moving in Washington State - Moving companies are required to provide this brochure to their customers who are planning a move within the state of Washington. The brochure includes your rights and responsibilities, insurance information and packing instructions.
      List of Registered Movers – All moving companies who are paid to move residential belongings within the state of Washington must be registered with the UTC.

Rules for Moving Companies

      Rates Tariff 15-C - Movers are required to charge rates within a minimum and maximum range. Companies can compete for your business within this set range. Tariff 15-C also provides information on terms and conditions of services.
      Mover’s Liability and Protection – There are four coverage options for protection of your household goods from loss or damage. (Note: Information is being updated)

      Damage Claims
      UTC has limited control over damage claims. If you have filed a damage claim with your moving company, and they have not responded, you may contact the UTC for assistance.

      Complaints
      If you have a dispute with your moving company, you should first try to resolve it with the company. Many disputes can be resolved by asking for a supervisor. If you are not satisfied with the response from your moving company, contact the UTC Consumer Affairs staff at 1-800-562-6150 or fill out our on-line complaint form.
